Yesterday evening the South Down Ulster Unionist Association had an 'unofficial' debate between the two likely candidates for the UU leadership, Tom Elliott (declared) and Basil McCrea (undeclared). However, judging by their prequel comments to the News Letter neither of them appear to be grasping with the situation the UUP finds itself in. Although the degree of pandering to the grassroots by Basil would indicate he is the more worried. At this stage in the race neither of them seem to be offering any great vision for the UUP, Eliott repeated failed UCUNF attack lines and McCrea offered more a list of what it shouldn't do. They appear to be still not getting it as regards the deterioration of the UUP's position.
